Royal courts once ruled Uganda. The Ganda, Nyoro, and Kalagala Ebwembe - Various - The Music Of Africa Series: Uganda I peoples each had kings, regal rituals, and majestic musical forms. But by the middle of the 20th century, the Ugandan courts were beginning to disappear: British colonization led to the downfall of the dominant Nyoro nation and the post-colonial Obote government quickly smashed any remaining kingdoms in their effort to consolidate power. Thankfully, musicologist Hugh Tracey recorded many royal musicians before they were dispersed or -- as was often the case -- killed.

It was during two trips to Uganda in the early '50s that Tracey documented these musicians performing in a number of different contexts. From official Nyoro horn bands to Ankole coronations songs and Shades Of Grey - Drunk In Public - Tapped Out! percussion ensembles, Tracey documented a host of waning musical traditions.

Beginning with the intricate melodies and syncopated vocal patterns of Ganda's last royal harpist -- Temusewo Mukasa -- the CD goes on to present Ganda songs of great historical importance, drum and endere flute songs that admonish careless canoeing on Lake Victoria, and a finely reticulated xylophone duet played by Chief Kago and his nephew.

Examples from the Nyoro include the organic tones of amakondere gourd horn bands and royal drummers playing stately rhythms fit for the opening of a new council or the first day of a new moon. The two Ankole pieces include a song for the installation of a chief and a polyphonic song In A Prescribed Manner - Buddy Rich - Playtime recounts the beauties of their countryside.

Though the royal courts of Uganda may be long gone, some of their Деньги - Da Budz - НЕТАБАК -- due to Tracey's efforts -- is here to stay. AllMusic relies heavily on JavaScript. Please enable JavaScript in your browser to use the site fully. Blues Classical Country. Electronic Folk International.
