These are live recordings from the mid to late '70s. Horowitz' legendary technique may be less than pristine, but his mercurial temperament burns brighter than ever. He melds Schumann's unwieldy, difficult to sustain Concerto Without Orchestra Sonata 3 into a coherent whole, with the famous third movement variations providing lyrical relief from its turbulent surroundings.
Horowitz probes the inspired but diffuse Humoreske for all its expressive potential, and finds hidden drama in the shorter works. The brightly-voiced piano Horowitz favored at this time is harsh in the higher register, although his trademark booming basses hit you like a kick in the belly.
Horowitz admirers need no urging to acquire this disc. Would you like to tell us about a lower price? If you are a seller for this product, would you like to suggest updates through seller support? Schumann was Vladimir Horowitz's favorite German composer. Once, when asked why Horowitz felt "at home" in Schumann, his wife responded that "they were both crazy". This compilation, recorded from and issued on CD inoffers both the Florestan and Eusebius sides of Schumann's dual nature.
Here we have a reflective Kinderscenen, featuring some remarkable voicing. Horowitz obviously plays the work as an adult looking back on childhood, which is how Schumann wrote the work. This recording is notably more straightforward than the pianist's live performance, yet somehow less moving emotionally than the wizened recordings from Horowitz's final concerts in Less successful is the Toccata, which is pianistically unstable and was heavily, and audibly, spliced.
This does not rise to the remarkable level of the pianist's famed recording. I vividly remember the first time I heard this recording of Schumann's Kreisleriana. It was September of - I was fresh out of high school. I worked at a classical record store and bought a cassette tape it was a "Masterworks Portrait" reissue that also had the Kinderszenen and Toccata.
Dusk was falling and it was misting outside, as I slipped the Walkman headphones on. I had already heard Rubinstein's recording of Kreisleriana III Quasi Variazioni.
Andantino De Clara Wieck - Vladimir Horowitz - Vladimir Horowitz Plays Great S a year earlier and thought "this piece is boring. Every moment held me spellbound. By the time I got home, I was soaked through. During my walk I took no notice of the weather. Horowitz learned Kreisleriana in the s, but did not play it in public until Several attempts to record the work in III Quasi Variazioni. Andantino De Clara Wieck - Vladimir Horowitz - Vladimir Horowitz Plays Great S were not successful, and Horowitz came to the conclusion that he needed the peace and quiet of a recording studio to achieve the concentration for a performance suitable for posterity.
Horowitz recorded the work at one inspired session on December 1,and this may well be the most successful Kreisleriana ever Ill Learn To Fly Tonight - Baccara - Colours. Ironically, Horowitz, who often had trouble holding together a Beethoven Sonata, makes this structurally splintered work emerge as one piece.
This is one Kreisleriana which is never rambling or boring. There is virtuosity here, but never for its own sake, and there is poetry in plenty.
This stands alongside the Liszt Sonata and Rachmaninoff Third Concerto as one of Horowitz's greatest recordings. It should be pointed out that this is the only CD reissue MK Internal Pattern Sequencer - Sascha Muller* - SSREXTRA04 Kreisleriana where I can guarantee that Horowitz's approved takes are used.
All issues from onward with the possible exception of the Blu-spec release, which I have not heard use alternate takes, which are noticeably different from the original LP and this CD issue. Although the performance is basically similar, there are several important differences in detail.
It's interesting to compare this version of Schumann's Arabeske, fromwith Horowitz's studio recording from The earlier version features swifter tempos, more delicate colors, and a more structural approach, which contrasts with the comparatively laid-back, yet somehow bolder performance given here.
The Blumenstucke Flower PieceOp. Horowitz plays the piece in a rather breezy manner, with less rubato than his recording. The sound is more than acceptable here, and especially fine in Kreisleriana.
This CD is a re-release of material originally on LP. If you are lucky or not you may find a Zu Früh - Joachim Deutschland - Zu Früh of the early CD release which contains different material of the same selection. On the alternate the piano sound is closer and I do not hear the pitch changes between takes that are in the LP and "authorized" CD release, for want of a better name.
It is not all an improvement, however, as in the alternate version there is one glaring error in editing. A portion of the first movement, quite near the opening, from the climax of the first statement of the first theme is missing. Even if you don't know the music you may catch this. I don't know how the editor didn't. Or whoever gave the go-ahead for the thing to go into production. The error must have been discovered and the correct recording re-instated, as the alternate version on CD is not so common.
I have both versions and have compared the performances. I personally am somewhat inclined towards the alternate version in some ways, for the closer sound if nothing else, despite the omission of some notes. The authorized version seems to hold together just a little bit better, however. Just to be clear, this copy III Quasi Variazioni. Andantino De Clara Wieck - Vladimir Horowitz - Vladimir Horowitz Plays Great S Amazon is the approved version.
